At just 10 grams, these are probably the lightest sunglasses for runners!

First Impression

I was very surprised when Soar announced sunglasses. Because this is certainly a product that you don’t just develop with your existing expertise. Especially not if you want it to be really good. But that’s exactly what Tim Soar and his team always aim for.

This is why they have teamed up with Cubitts, an innovative London-based eyewear manufacturer that combines engineering and aesthetics. Two companies that tick very similarly have probably found each other. 😉

The result is a pair of sunglasses for runners that couldn’t be lighter: the combination of a titanium frame and the RiPel™ ZEISS protective lens weighs in at an incredible 10 grams!

The connection between these two elements is very exciting because it is absolutely minimal: all you can see from the front are three thin titanium strips and, of course, the specially shaped glass. Otherwise, the actual frame runs behind the glass.

The temples are also reduced to a minimum and can of course be bent to fit the shape of the head perfectly.

Cross notches at the end of the temples ensure a non-slip grip on the skin. Here, too, the company has remained true to the titanium material and has not applied a rubber coating.

The same applies to the nosepieces: they can be bent to fit the shape of the bridge of the nose and do not have a rubber coating, but also a grooved pattern.

A lot of development work also went into the shape of the lens. The team was not only concerned with providing optimum coverage of the field of vision, but also with protecting the eyes from the steep angle of the sun. This is why the lens is slightly higher in the eyebrow area.

Speaking of glass: it is sweat-repellent, reduces glare and, according to the company, sharpens vision even in the toughest conditions, so that nothing disturbs your concentration while running.

Running Experiences

The glasses fit pretty well out of the box and slipped only minimally during their first use. Even on the 5k time trail, this was not a problem. However, it’s worth checking out not only the Designer’s Notes, but also the Fitting Guide on the Soar website.

SOAR–Cubitts Cirrus Fitting Guide

Just as Tim describes it, it’s exactly right: you have to adjust the temples so that the Soar Cubitts Cirrus can’t slide forward. To do this, the bend really has to start directly at your own ear. This is because the glasses are not held in place by “ clamping the head”, but by resting properly on the ears.

Once you have taken this step, the Soar sunglasses simply fit perfectly. Nothing slips or wobbles at all and you really can’t feel them thanks to their low weight.

I can also fully confirm all the other advertised properties: the shape of the lens is simply perfect to fully cover the field of vision and minimize irritation from the vertical sun. Even from the side, no rays of sunlight find their way to the eye. The lens is also really not particularly susceptible to fingerprints or other smudges. Even after four weeks, there has been no need to clean the Cirrus.

My only criticism is that the glasses don’t sit well on the head if you don’t want to wear them on your nose – on days with unstable weather, for example.

Conclusion

Soar Cubitts Sirrus Sunglasses
Almost perfect!
With the Cirrus, Soar and Cubitts have developed the lightest sunglasses for runners. They fit perfectly after adjustment and are really not noticeable. The lens also has excellent properties. Hats off to this achievement!

Hi! It’s me, the Harlerunner.

This is where Thomas Pier writes about running and (much more than just the necessary) equipment. I don't run particularly fast or far. But I like to share my experiences as an ambitious recreational runner, curious early-adopter and as my own trainer.

I am happy about every digital contacting - but even more so about every kilometer run together.
